The White House is already one of the most blocked accounts on Bluesky

The Trump administration is extending its social media outreach to a surprising platform, as the White House and multiple government agencies joined Bluesky this past Friday.

In its inaugural post, the newly created White House account shared a compilation of Trump footage and memes, along with the playful message: “What’s up, Bluesky? We thought you might’ve missed some of our greatest hits, so we put this together for you.”

Following suit, various government agencies—including the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Commerce, and the Department of Transportation—established their own Bluesky accounts. Each agency quickly disseminated messages criticizing Democrats amidst the ongoing government shutdown.

“We heard this is a great place to have an open and honest dialogue, so we’re here to discuss how the Democrat shutdown is undermining our country on the world stage,” wrote the Department of State. (Legal experts have indicated that such statements from government entities may violate the Hatch Act.)

The tone of the posts was generally upbeat and somewhat provocative, suggesting that the administration’s social media teams anticipated, and perhaps welcomed, backlash on a platform recognized as a left-leaning alternative to Elon Musk’s X. Bluesky users quickly obliged, with many responses to the initial White House post referencing Trump’s association with the infamous Jeffrey Epstein.

“The reason they’re coming after this place is that they can’t control the people on it, and it drives them crazy,” remarked The Onion CEO, Ben Collins.

Simultaneously, many influential Bluesky users urged their followers to “block and move on,” with comedian Paul F. Tompkins noting that “It’s weirdly fun to block the White House.”

Remarkably, within just 48 hours of its launch, the White House has become one of the most blocked accounts on Bluesky. According to ClearSky, a platform monitoring blocking stats, the White House account has been blocked by approximately 91,000 users, while only garnering 10,000 followers. The account of Vice President JD Vance, who joined back in June, is the only one facing more blocks than the White House.

Although the new government accounts have yet to reach the same level of engagement, they occupied all of the top five most blocked accounts within 24 hours. Additionally, other right-leaning profiles seemed to take pride in their affiliation with the Trump administration on Bluesky, as they too experienced significant blocking.
