Datadog, a leading cloud monitoring and security platform, has introduced an engaging solution to an age-old question: what’s updog?
Rather than responding with the classic punchline, “Not much, you?” Datadog has launched a comprehensive web dashboard that enables developers to monitor the operational status of various services and tools, including major players like AWS, Cloudflare, OpenAI, and Slack. This innovative tool allows users to verify the functionality of significant software providers with ease. Best of all, the tool is free to use, so anyone interested can explore Updog to check on the status of their favorite SaaS providers—essentially, is everything up… dog?
Clearly, Datadog infused some humor into this branding initiative, and rightfully so. Rhys Sullivan, a software engineer, humorously noted on X in June, “You’re telling me that Datadog has an uptime monitoring product and they didn’t call it ‘updog’?”
Fast forward four months, and Datadog engineer Tim Brown playfully responded, “Here you go,” linking to the recently launched Updog.
Sullivan’s original tweet referenced the branding of a feature within the paid Datadog platform that offers advanced monitoring capabilities. In contrast, Updog is designed for more general use, allowing anyone to check the status of well-known online services without needing a Datadog subscription.
On a more serious note, Updog stands to be an invaluable resource for developers, particularly in light of recent incidents. For example, a significant day-long AWS outage disrupted numerous online services, impacting banks, payment processors, and governmental functions.
Datadog boasts that Updog distinguishes itself through its integration of AI, which can detect subtle anomalies in telemetry data—the transmission and collection of information from servers and services—thereby identifying potential outages at a faster rate. If Updog can deliver on this promise, it could drastically enhance the ability of businesses to respond proactively to issues affecting crucial SaaS tools that are used for everything from payment processing to accessing cloud-based data.

According to a blog post by Datadog, “Updog.ai recently detected an Amazon DynamoDB degradation 32 minutes prior to AWS stepping in with an update on its own status page.”
While companies may not always be able to prevent significant system failures like the recent AWS outage, having early insights into service disruptions can provide them with valuable time to assess their circumstances—and that’s precisely what Updog offers.
