Google Fi to add AI-enhanced audio and RCS web messaging

On Tuesday, Google unveiled exciting updates for Google Fi, its telecommunications service, introducing features like AI-driven noise reduction and RCS web messaging enhancements.

The tech titan announced that phone calls will now benefit from AI-enhanced audio technology designed to diminish background noise and enhance voice clarity. This improvement aims to facilitate “more natural-sounding conversations,” even when users are communicating with someone using a landline or an older device.

While this feature will be activated by default, users retain the option to disable it if they wish. The rollout of AI-enhanced audio is scheduled for next month.

In addition, Google is enhancing its RCS web messaging capabilities, revamping the “Messages for web” interface to fully support RCS. This update will enable users to share high-resolution photos and videos seamlessly within their message threads. Look forward to this upgrade arriving in December.

Google Fi is also expanding its Wi-Fi Auto Connect+ feature, which connects users to premium Wi-Fi networks, ensuring a more reliable connection in bustling environments such as airports and shopping malls.

Jane Harnett, Senior Product Manager at Google Fi Wireless, noted in the blog post, “We’re increasing the availability of this feature to millions of locations, including major airports like LAX, ORD, and JFK, as well as participating shopping malls and retailers. This feature operates automatically at no additional cost. Furthermore, we are the only major carrier to automatically secure your online activity with an encrypted connection when using premium Wi-Fi.”

Users can easily identify their connection through Wi-Fi Auto Connect+ by looking for the W+ icon in their status bar.

In another noteworthy announcement, the Google Fi app is set to introduce personalized AI-driven summaries that clarify charges, highlight monthly changes, and explain how different plan adjustments could influence future costs.

To cap off Tuesday’s announcements, Google Fi is launching a limited-time promotion for new subscribers, offering 50% off for 15 months for those who bring their own phone and sign up for either the “Unlimited Essentials” or “Unlimited Plan.”
